“When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.” Roy Disney
Roy was Walt’s little brother and a genius in his own right. He is referring to the basis of how we make subjective decisions. There is much black and white in business. Mostly financial and project timing, budgeting, forecasting, maximization, etc and these objective decisions can be a little easier to make. For example; we know how much money we have to spend in various accounts for the remainder of the month and we have an educated idea how much revenue we will take in for the same time period. It is not too difficult to come to conclusions of what to spend and when.
Subjective decisions depend on the values you live by. Decisions of personnel evaluation and promotion , training and discipline. We have values we live by and our employer has values with which to operate the company. These should be clearly communicated in an employee handbook and with ongoing training and reminders in every staff meeting. Your team needs to know how the company does business and how it makes decisions.
Similarly, it is vital that you communicate your values to your team so they know how YOU make decisions. But here is what Roy is saying…you have to know your values and they need to be consistent and strong. Like a rudder on a ship. Only then can you communicate them, to your team and proselytize them. That is, get them to buy into what you’re selling. They may/will grow someday and take what you have taught them, but not well if you were not consistent and consistency comes from your set of values.
I am not giving you a set of values today…I am not that wise but you need to give this some thought. Some of whomI quote may help you. Review past posts and tune in every day for more.
Now get back out there and Make the rest of today a GREAT DAY!
