John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled…”

The beginning of the gospel of John, Chapter 14. Especially poignant on 9/11. On that day when everything was spinning out of control…from our perspective…God was there, in charge. Knowing that, you could take heart, have faith, be at peace and do what you had to do. We are always called to do what we can do but to have the bedrock of this verse in your heart before you sally forth is beyond a comfort, it is almost an exhortation. If you knew that God was in charge then, 19 years ago on that beautiful blue September morning, then, you know that He is in charge now.

If I may take a moment, I have been doing a little traveling this summer and I have noticed the overwhelming strength of this nation. The strength of its people. There is an intricacy in the fabric of America. In every corner of our land we are connected with each other in service or business or school or philanthropy or commerce or in prayer. There is such an honest strength and love in and for this country that no force will over throw our way of life, unless we let it, unless good men, and women, do nothing.

What we are witnessing on TV every night in big cities and small has more motivations than the press would have you know. There are legitimate problems, sincere efforts and elusive solutions but there is also, hate and deception and anarchy. There is a difference. It would behoove you to educate yourself on the truth and the facts but in and through all of this, let not your heart be troubled. This country was founded as a “Shining city on a hill.” For all of its faults, for all of our faults, we grow stronger and above all else, God is in charge.
