Leadership consists of picking good men and helping them do their best” Chester W. Nimitz

As we continue to remember our vets this week, I want to tell you a bit, a small bit, about Chester Nimitz. There have been only four Five Star Admirals in the history of the United States Navy. He was CINCPAC, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet in World War II. He commanded the largest fleet ever assembled. There is even a movie out now, a remake of the Battle of Midway. It was clearly the turning point in the war in the Pacific and clearly the Hand of Providence was there. Go to the movie but read about the man who called the shots. He knows leadership.

Leadership translates to your job as well, does it not? Leaders lead, they delegate, they complete, they raise up the next generation. In terms of the latter, not all people to whom we delegate succeed. You can provide their training, provide materials and education and you can help them do their best, you can exhort, cajole and befriend but you cannot make them or will them to succeed or even do their best. Then leadership would mandate you to take another form of leadership which is not always pleasant. However, if you lead, give a direction (command) and it is not accomplished or even followed then leadership for the rest of the team would mandate a replacement or termination.

Leadership is not always marching your troop downhill on a sunny day. Sometimes it is raining and cold and windy and uphill but lead you must. SO be a leader today and tomorrow, make the good choices and the hard ones. And choose to Make Today, a GREAT DAY!
