“The biggest mistake people make in life is not trying to make a living at doing what they enjoy most.” Malcolm Forbes

Forbes was an entrepreneur and publisher of Forbes magazine founded by his father. Nice to inherit money, although that is another subject for another day.

You have also heard if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. Same thing. The point once again is about what you are doing for a living. I speak primarily from the perspective of a hotel guy but I believe this applies generically as well. If you don’t love this business, find a reason to or get out. If you’re not happy with what you’re doing, it will seep into and onto your team and in the business of hospitality that transmits to the guests as well. Just think about that.

Hey listen, hotels aren’t easy, they never close. There are plenty of things that need to get done that aren’t all that much fun. But there are rewarding areas too and the one area I found the most rewarding was working with my team, new managers, new employees. This was why I stayed in hotels for forty years. So find your favorite piece of the business and do it because you love it but if you don’t have a favorite, maybe you should think about something other than hospitality.

There is a commercial out now from Prudential that makes the point that keeping your people happy is what keeps your people. You and what you do for them is what keeps them happy. If you are not happy with your job or choice of careers, get out of the way and let another lead. Do your team a favor.

Am I making my point? Do what you love, whatever that is. Now go do it while you Make today a Great Day!
