There is this Dutch guy name Alexander Den Heijer who calls himself a “purposologist.” If you can make a living at that, let me know how! In all seriousness, he is a motivational speaker, trainer and consultant. Very young. Very smart. I have enjoyed learning about him and I encourage you to too. One of his best conceptual ideas he expressed as:
“When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.”
Whatever kind of organization you run, be it a department in a hotel or the entire hotel or any business that employs people, you always have to look at it from two perspectives. The Macro and the Micro. That is, the big picture and the individual.
When you have an employee that is not blossoming, you have to consider if it is the person or the organization in which they work. Are they not accomplishing their mission because of built in hurdles? Are there other people that are actively holding them back? A million questions and reasons.
Now I’m not saying that everyone will succeed or that you are a failure if they don’t, but you have to ask the question. Is their environment sick? Just consider before you jump to progressive discipline and correction.
Maybe you need to fix the environment, not the flower.
Now go Make it a GREAT DAY!!!
