“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

Coco Channel

More than just a fashion designer or namesake of Chanel #5. Fascinating women of culture and intrigue which I encourage you to read a little more about her.

In one way I applaud this. I have always said, who wants to be normal? Being normal sounds like purgatory to me. Now I’m not saying that I want to be or to be conceived as insane, nor do I want to be considered a loose cannon. I want to be seen as extremely capable and calm in a crisis. I am. But normal? No!

Perhaps not in all business but in hotels specifically, we must always be in the process of training our replacements, actually more than one. If we don’t train our replacement, we reduce our chances of a timely promotion. As a matter of fact, if you run a department or division or an entire hotel, you must train people at all levels under your care. In other words, you have to make yourself replaceable. Only a brave manager can do this. Are you? Never be afraid of being replaced. If you are training people to do a better job, your department, your division, your hotel will run better because of you.

One last thing, I am not saying that you should hold the hands of your trainees and potential managers. You should challenge them to learn and do better as you guide and mentor. But train them for their futures and yours.

Now go Make your day a GREAT DAY!!!
