Sometimes, “It’s all about the fishin, not so much about the catchin.” I don’t know who said this but it applies to my motivation while on the job.
Back in my Hyatt days, if we ever wanted to get a promotion, we needed to have 2, 3 even four guys in the training pipeline to take our job. So we were always fishin. We always looked for people who exhibited the smarts, displayed the ambition, had the desire to learn and work hard, offered the characteristics of purpose and leadership so they could earn a promotion and by extension, free us up for a promotion. So it often took patience to find and train and test a successor, and, it didn’t always work. But when I’d find that someone, I’d hold on and pour myself into that person, for their future and mine.
There was more fishin than catchin but you couldn’t catch unless you fished. Sometimes they knew what you were doing for them, sometimes they didn’t, but we still fished and fished and fished. And when the catch happened, it was special.
If this is your reality, keep fishin. Some days you come home skunked, but on some occasions you land a treasure So get back out there and fish and Make it a great day for you and the fish.
