Noted author, who is a contemporary for a change is Bryant H. McGill who makes the point,

“One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.”

Have you run into someone who is not listening to you when you are making a point or when you are trying to teach them? Sometimes you can see their eyes glaze over and sometimes you can see them forming a retort or explanation while you are still speaking. They are absolutely not listening to the words that are coming out of your mouth. They might be in trouble so they are thinking of excuses, they may not respect you or just not care.

Do you do this? Are you so caught up in making your point that you aren’t listening? Maybe, like me, you have heard it all before and you are patiently waiting for them to finish so you can tell them what you want them to do because you are the BOSS.

Then they feel devalued. Is that what you want to get across to your people? Or should you take a breath and give them your full attention. Respect them. You communicate to them in more ways than just talking. Give them the respect they deserve because they are your team. They could be totally wrong, so then teach them but listen first. It may be that they are right and you haven’t seen the whole picture through their eyes.

This works at home too. Listen to your spouse. Listen to your children. Help them know you respect them and care enough to listen and help them to Make it a GREAT DAY!!!
