20th century American writer, Bessie Andersen Stanley made the observation,

“To know even one life has breathed easier becuase you have lived…This is to have succeeded.”

In my experience in the hospitality business, it took a long time to make any money so I had to search for inspiration, for a reason to stay in a business that I loved and I knew was the right place for me. I knew that I would not give up until I succeeded but balancing accounts or filling the house or high Guest Service scores were not enough. I needed to know that I made a difference. I realized that if someone with my modest talents could succeed then maybe, just maybe, I could help someone else get one step down their road toward success. Maybe I could help them see their talent and maybe they could make a better life for themselves in this business or beyond. It helped me sleep most nights.

Many times I believed in them more than they did but I can happily report that many have surpassed even my expectations for them and they have gone on to far greater success than I. That was my whole motivation. This is not to say that I was responsible for their success or than I am some sort of saint but perhaps I helped them breathe easier.

When you have those days when you are just working and wondering what is it all about…remember the impact that you can have on the individuals of your team or even those not yet on your team. Recruit them. Give them a vision, a dream. Help one person breathe easier today while you Make theirs and yours a GREAT DAY!!!
