Get started and begin doing. As opposed to doing nothing. In our business, hospitality, when there is no paperwork or budgeting or forecasting or HR paperwork or inventory or revenue management, etc., etc, we may tend to sit back a moment and take a deep breath.

I recently worked with a young woman who was very high energy, very focused and always finished her assignments and daily work requirements quickly and efficiently.

Inevitably, she would come in my office and declare she was done and say, “What can I do now.” Always eager to learn more. Invariably, I would tell her to go out of the office and into the hotel and to spread her “fairy dust.” In other words, visit your staff, make sure they have what they need to get their jobs done well. Encourage them to do well, listen to their stories and they may reveal their needs and you might learn what makes them tick. Be a servant to your team.

This is all about…doing.
